Start of day 4. North out of Flagstaff through the pine forests past some snowy peaks then gradually back out into the desert country. This is the edge of Navajo land on Hwy 64 heading west toward the Grand Canyon. The Navajo have monetized the viewpoints (a $2 fee) & you have to run the gauntlet of vendors to get the viewpoint of the Little Colorado River Gorge.
Worth it though, this is a good primer for the big ditch.
While Moe was doing his thing in the gauntlet a road-runner went right thru the parking lot. I dug out the zoom lens just in time to see him go over the edge of one of the feeder ravines. They sure can motor when they want too. (No, the coyote was not chasing it...)
Just past the last viewpoint before leaving the Navajo lands there is a handpainted sign stating "Some very nice Indians are behind you". Made me wonder what the ones up ahead are like...
