The GDT or Great Divide Trail runs from the U.S. border north 1200km to Kakwa Lake crossing the continental divide over 30 times. It is a combination of roads, trails, and routes with no official status as the 'GDT' and perhaps that's ok. Hank and I covered a modest section of this route over five days (including the trails high point at 2590m) and a good chunk of it was pristine alpine that wouldn’t hold up well to the masses who are often attracted to high profile trails (Like the West Coast Trail etc.) July 31 to Aug 4 with more pictures to come when I get time. This shot is from a high point above Michelle Lakes, one of many spectacular view points from this trip.

Mt. Sparrowhawk
An 'easy' scramble to a 10,000' peak. July 26, 2008.
Mt. Sparrowhawk 3121m elevation, +-12km, 1600m gain including Read's Tower.View from Read's Tower over the Spray Valley
View from Read's Tower toward Mt. Sparrowhawk summit block.
Read's Tower with the Spray Valley in the background.
In retrospect the extra 250m should have been saved for another day, perhaps tied in with Sparrowhawk Tarns, but it was still a cool view. The scrambly bit.
Looking down from the summit at Memorial Lakes
Summit Pano
View up at Mt. Sparrowhawk summit block... a long talus slog.
Read's Tower on right, Mt. Sparrowhawk summit block on left.
I didn't linger at the top, part of our party did not summit so I didn't want to hold them up, especially since despite using low gear all the way up so as not to bonk, my right knee was telling me stories most of the way down. Nasty nasty stories.
I'll get back to more photos of Lake of the Falls etc. soon.

Lake of the Falls
“Time is the quality of nature that keeps events from happening all at once. Lately it doesn’t seem to be working.” Anon.
Ran across this quote and it seemed appropriate as I wrap up work at almost 8pm…Anyway this photo, just got back from our father and sons backpacking trip to Lake of the Falls / Landslide Lake July 18-21, 2008 which put an exclamation point in the middle July for us. It is looking back down towards Lake of the Falls from our side-trip day up the valley and Lake of the Falls Lookout. I’ll post more pics and descriptions upcoming… just had a quick blast thru the photos on a break and this one stood out as being fairly representative of the country we traveled thru. And I think it’s a pretty good shot too!

Jumpingpound / Cox Hill
Solo-cardio. Jumpingpound Mountain 2225m, Cox Hill 2195m, 17km, 725m gain. A little leftover snow from Thurday's system but the wildflowers were out in force.

Moraine Lake
Sometimes it pays to get up early. Just a quick five of who knows how many frames.
Yoho Valley
A car-camping trip to Lake Louise with friends up from Denver... an easy 'kid friendly' stumble. Point Lace Falls.

Tessa
This is Shannon’s new dog, Tessa. I say Shannon’s dog because she kinda picked her out, named her, and she’s doing most of the walking and the training right now. We are told she is part Golden Retriever and part Collie and we got her from Heaven Can Wait, a local rescue organization. She’s a runner so we have to watch the gates real close, hopefully we can cure her of that as that’s the reason she ended up on the block in the first place… wouldn’t stay home.
Shannon’s been training her and making good progress already including some off leash work! These pictures were taken back in May but I find her to be quite camera shy (actually afraid of the camera)… Better shots upcoming.
I haven’t spent enough time with her yet to grow too attached. She is, after all, taking Lucky’s place and that is a ‘big’ collar to fill.
Volcano Ridge

Family outing from June 15, 2008. A nice ramble with wild flowers, rushing streams, and views accessed off Gorge Creek Trail.
Volcano Ridge +-1900m, 13.7km, +-250m gain.

Moose Mountain
A solo outing June 14 mostly for exercise. After all this rain I was really feeling the need to get out. Moose Mountain elevation 2437m, 14.6 km, +-670m gain. Looking up toward the summit. A little knee-deep postholing but not too bad.
View to the west.
Looking back from the 'false summit' toward the lookout.
Late 'Prairie Crocus' in the lower meadows. Also saw some Shooting Stars, Moss Campion and a few others. The season is late this year.

Graduation
Some day Mike is going to come to me and say "Dad, why aren't there any good pictures of me at my grad?" And I will show him a selection of shots like this and say "Because you were being Jerky McJerkface and most of them turned out like this."
But it was a good day, a fun time was had by all. And when all is said and done this photo will probably remind me more about that day than the cheesy posed shots the pros got.

Slush, Drugs & Rock & Roll
With spring kicking into high-gear here we had our pick of long weekend family activities from canoeing, hiking, or one last crack at Sunshine on the second last day of the season. It wasn't a hard choice. Here's the slush part (tails of my skis)... for those who don't understand spring skiing... its all about the easy turns in the soft snow, the sun, and generally positive attitude everyone has.
Eric takes flight.
A rare picture of Mike without a snowball in his hand.
A long view showing the weather... mixed bag of sun, wind, bit of rain... but its all good.
The Drugs? Advil of course and the Rock & Roll courtesy BC/DC, an AC/DC tribute band from Nelson who put on one hell of a live show on the hill.
Other weekend activities: chores, gardening, some work, and playing with Tessa... our new dog. She's camera shy though and I haven't got a good shot of her yet. Wait for it.
